Hi Alex,
Thanks for the post, can you tell us what AVRE stands for?

Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineers
is it 165 mm demolition gun?

Added by Kreuzerkrieg on 25 September 2010.
It's a bunker buster to clear bunkers and other items which get in the way of the armoured division

Editor note: someone forgot to enter the name field. :-)

OK, as it says it's the 165 Centurion Mk 5 AVRE (Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineers). The 165mm fired the HESH (High Explosive Squash Head) round and was amazingly accurate, It would primarily be used against area targets such as Bridge piers, abutments, reinforced positions, bunkers etc. The vehicle also had te Dozer Blade mounted on the front and a Fascine / Class 60 sradle mounted on the front Glacis plate. In addition it towed either a Giant Viper trailer or the purpose built 'AVRE Trailer' with either 1 Fascine or up to 3 rolls of Class 60 trackway in it.
The Cent Avre's were last used in the 1st Gulf War, not bad for an AFV that first came into service in the 1950's!
