M114

The M114 was designed to be fast and stealthy. It was amphibious and deployable by parachute. But unlike the M113 which became one of the most successful armoured vehicles, it quickly proved unsuited to use in the Vietnam war because of it's poor off-road performance, and was replaced in the reconnaissance role by the M551 Sheridan light tank. By 1973, it had been branded a failure and retired by the US Army.

I was in the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment and we had these until 1978. By then it was the M114A2 version with a 20mm cannon.
